What Masonry Restoration Involves

Masonry restoration is the process of repairing brick, block, stone and concrete so a building performs the way it was built to — not simply covering the damage over. Most of it comes down to water. Once mortar joints open up or a chimney crown cracks, water gets into the wall, freezes, and pushes the masonry apart from the inside. Repair the surface without fixing the cause and you will be back at it in two winters.

Brick Repair & Repointing

Repointing means raking out deteriorated mortar and replacing it with a fresh mix matched to the original in colour, texture and hardness. Done properly it restores weather resistance and structural integrity without touching the brick itself. Where brick has spalled, cracked or lost its face, we cut out and replace the affected units, matching colour, size and texture so the repair disappears into the surrounding wall. We also rebuild window sills and lintels, correct failed flashing, and use brick tinting where new material needs to be blended into old.

Chimney & Fireplace Repair

Chimneys fail before anything else on a building because they are exposed on all four sides and take the full freeze-thaw cycle at the top of the roofline. We rebuild chimneys from the roofline up, replace cracked concrete crowns, install caps and flashing, repair and reline flues, and restore both indoor and outdoor fireplaces. All chimney and fireplace work is completed to W.E.T.T. standards.

Stonework, Concrete & Structural Repair

Stonework repair covers everything from repointing fieldstone foundations and rebuilding retaining walls to restoring cut-stone facades and heritage detailing. On the structural side we repair spalling concrete, treat exposed reinforcing steel, restore balconies, slabs, walkways and parking structures, and carry out foundation parging and water penetration repairs.

Heritage & Historical Restoration

Older buildings need soft, lime-based mortars and period-appropriate technique. A modern hard mortar traps moisture and destroys the brick it sits against, which is why so much well-intentioned heritage repair ends up causing more damage than it prevents. We source compatible brick and stone, match original mortar colour and joint profile, and work to standards appropriate to designated heritage properties.
