Masonry Contractor vs. General Contractor: Who Should Fix Your Brick?
When something goes wrong with the brick on your home, it is natural to call whoever you already know. That might be a general contractor, a handyman or a renovation company that did work for you before.
For some jobs that works fine. For many masonry repairs, it does not. Here is the difference between a masonry contractor and a general contractor, and how to know who to call.
What a General Contractor Does
A general contractor manages projects. They coordinate trades, schedule work and oversee the overall job, whether it is a kitchen renovation, an addition or a new build.
Most general contractors do not do specialized masonry work themselves. When brick or stone work comes up, they usually hire a mason as a subcontractor.
That is not a bad thing on a large renovation. But for a masonry repair on its own, it can mean extra layers between you and the person actually doing the work.
What a Masonry Contractor Does
A masonry contractor focuses on brick, block, stone and mortar. That includes:
- Repointing and mortar repair
- Brick replacement and colour matching
- Chimney repair and rebuilds
- Lintel replacement
- Fireplace repair and rebuilds
- Structural brick and block repair
- Impact damage repair
- Heritage and historical restoration
- Parging and foundation masonry
Because this is all they do, a masonry contractor understands how different bricks and mortars behave, why certain repairs fail and how to fix the cause instead of covering the symptom.
Why It Matters for Repairs
Masonry repair is not just about making a wall look better. A few common issues show why experience matters.
Mortar matching
Mortar that is too hard for the brick can cause the brick to crack and spall. Older homes often need softer or lime based mortar. Choosing the wrong mix is one of the most common mistakes made by non specialists.
Finding the source of the problem
Cracks, stains and crumbling brick usually have a cause, such as moisture, movement or failed flashing. A mason is trained to look for that cause before starting the repair.
Matching what is already there
Blending new brick and mortar with an existing wall takes knowledge of brick types, joint profiles and colour matching. A patchy repair is easy to spot from the street.
Chimney work
Chimneys combine masonry, flashing, crowns and flues. Repairs here need someone who understands how all of those parts work together and how to work safely at height.
When a General Contractor Makes Sense
A general contractor is often the right call when:
- Masonry is one small part of a larger renovation
- You are building an addition that ties into existing brick
- Multiple trades need to be coordinated at once
Even then, it is reasonable to ask who will be doing the masonry and what experience they have.
When to Call a Masonry Contractor Directly
Go straight to a masonry contractor when:
- The main problem is brick, mortar, stone or a chimney
- You have cracks, spalling or loose bricks
- The home is older or has heritage masonry
- A vehicle or other impact has damaged a brick wall
- Previous repairs have failed
- You want the person assessing the job to be the one doing it
Questions to Ask Any Contractor Doing Masonry Work
Whoever you hire, ask:
- Who will actually be doing the masonry work?
- How do you choose the mortar for my brick?
- What do you think is causing the damage?
- How will you match the existing colour and joints?
- Are you insured for this type of work?
- Can you show examples of similar projects?
Clear answers to these questions will tell you a lot about the quality of the repair you can expect.
