Stone Masonry for Your Home: Natural Stone Veneer, Repairs and Where Stone Works Best
Stone has a way of making a home look solid and permanent. A stone front entrance, a stone fireplace or a band of stone along the foundation can completely change how a house feels from the street.
Stone masonry is also very different from brick work. The materials, installation methods and repairs all have their own rules. Here is what homeowners should know before adding stone or repairing the stone they already have.
Natural Stone vs. Manufactured Stone Veneer
Most stone on homes today is a veneer, a layer of stone applied to the outside of a wall rather than a structural stone wall. There are two main types.
Natural stone veneer
Natural stone veneer is real quarried stone, cut thin enough to be applied to a wall. Because it is real stone, the colour runs all the way through and each piece is unique.
- Very durable and holds its colour for decades
- Chips and scratches are hard to notice
- Heavier, so the wall and footing need to support it
- Usually costs more for materials
Manufactured stone veneer
Manufactured or cultured stone is a concrete product cast in moulds and tinted to look like stone.
- Lighter and often less expensive
- Consistent shapes make installation faster
- Colour is on the surface, so chips can show grey concrete underneath
- Can fade over time in strong sun
Both can look excellent when installed well. The right choice depends on your budget, the look you want and where the stone is going.
Where Stone Works Best on a Home
Some of the most popular places we install stone include:
- Front entrances and porches, for curb appeal right where guests arrive
- Lower walls and foundations, as a stone wainscot that hides parged concrete
- Fireplace surrounds, inside the home or at the cottage
- Columns and pillars on porches, gates and driveways
- Chimneys, especially on cottage style homes in Muskoka and Georgian Bay
- Feature walls on additions or garages
Stone also works well when combined with brick. A stone base with brick above is a classic Ontario look.
Why Installation Matters So Much
Most stone veneer problems come from how it was installed, not from the stone itself. A proper installation includes:
- A water resistant barrier behind the stone
- A drainage plane or gap so water can escape
- Proper flashing at windows, doors and the roofline
- A weep screed or clearance at the bottom so the stone is not sitting in soil or mulch
- Fully bedded stones with mortar behind each piece
When these steps are skipped, water gets trapped behind the stone. In our climate that leads to freeze and thaw damage, loose stones, staining and sometimes rot in the wall behind it.
Common Stone Masonry Repairs
Loose or fallen stones
Stones that come loose usually point to poor bonding or water getting behind them. They should be reset properly with the cause of the moisture addressed.
Cracked or crumbling mortar joints
Like brick, stone needs its mortar joints maintained. Repointing stone takes care because joints are often wider and irregular, and the mortar must suit the stone.
Staining and efflorescence
White salts or dark streaks on stone often mean water is moving through the wall. Cleaning helps the appearance, but the water source needs to be found.
Damage at grade
Stone that sits too close to the ground, mulch or a driveway absorbs water and road salt. Over time this can break down the mortar and the stone face.
Repairing Older Stone Walls and Foundations
Many older homes and farmhouses in Simcoe County and the northern GTA have solid stone foundations or walls. These were usually built with soft lime mortar, and they need repairs that match. Using a hard modern mortar on old stone can trap moisture and damage the stone over time.
If your home has original stone, look for a mason with heritage experience before any repointing is done.
