Do You Need a Chimney Cap? What It Does and When to Install One
Look at the top of most chimneys in Barrie and you will see one of two things: a metal cap over the flue, or an open flue with nothing on it. That small piece of metal makes a bigger difference than most homeowners realize.
A chimney cap is one of the least expensive parts of a chimney, but it protects some of the most expensive ones. Here is what a cap does, how to tell if yours is missing or failing, and why late fall is a good time to have one installed.
What a Chimney Cap Does
A chimney cap sits on top of the flue and covers the opening with a roof and a mesh screen. It does several jobs at once:
- Keeps rain and snow from falling straight down the flue
- Stops birds, raccoons and squirrels from nesting inside
- Blocks leaves and debris that can clog the flue
- Helps stop sparks and embers from landing on the roof
- Reduces downdrafts on windy days
Without a cap, every rainfall sends water directly into the chimney. Over time that water rusts the damper, damages the flue liner and soaks into the masonry from the inside.
Chimney Cap vs. Chimney Crown
These two are often confused, but they are different parts.
The crown is the masonry or concrete slab that covers the top of the chimney around the flue. It protects the brick below it.
The cap sits on top of the flue itself and protects the opening.
A chimney needs both. A good cap on a cracked crown will still let water into the brick, and a solid crown with no cap still lets water pour down the flue. When we inspect the top of a chimney, we always look at the two together.
Signs Your Chimney Needs a Cap
Your chimney may need a new or replacement cap if you notice:
- No cap at all on top of the flue
- A cap that is rusted, bent or leaning
- A torn or missing mesh screen
- Scratching or bird sounds inside the chimney
- Water or debris collecting in the firebox
- A rusty damper that is hard to open or close
- A musty smell from the fireplace after rain
If animals have already moved in, they need to be removed safely before a cap is installed. Sealing them inside causes a much bigger problem.
Types of Chimney Caps
Single flue caps
These fit over one flue tile and are the most common choice for homes with a single fireplace or appliance.
Multi flue caps
When a chimney has more than one flue, a larger cap can cover all of them at once. It mounts to the crown rather than to individual flue tiles.
Material choices
Galvanized steel caps are the most affordable but can rust within a few years. Stainless steel and copper caps last much longer and hold up better to Ontario winters. For most homes, stainless steel offers the best balance of cost and lifespan.
Why Proper Installation Matters
A cap has to be sized to the flue, fastened securely and installed so it does not restrict the draft. A cap that is too small or sits too low can cause smoke to back up into the home. One that is not fastened well can blow off in the first winter storm.
Installation is also the right time to check the condition of the crown, flue tile and upper brick. Many of the chimneys we cap need a small crown repair or some repointing at the top at the same time. Doing it all in one visit saves a second trip up the roof.
Why Late Fall Is a Good Time
Once snow and ice arrive, getting on a roof becomes harder and less safe. Installing a cap before winter keeps snow out of the flue, stops freeze and thaw damage at the top of the chimney and keeps animals from looking for a warm place to spend the season.
If you plan to use your fireplace this winter, a cap also helps it draw better and keeps debris out of the flue.
